Doctor Who Chess Set by EldalinSkywalker Doctor Who Chess Set by EldalinSkywalker
UPDATE: I created a blog! Follow this [link]

UPDATE: I made another Doctor Who chess set! It is currently for sale. Just follow this [link]

I'm quite pleased with my chess set. The pieces are all made from scratch! 32 pieces is quite a lot, I tell you... I like some pieces more than others, but I guess that's unavoidable. I wish you could all see this in real life though, it's much better than the photos. For instance, the Doctor's hair came out wonderfully, but can hardly be seen here.

Size: the board is 31x31 cm (exactly 1 foot square). The tallest pieces are the kings, they are almost 7 cm tall (2.75 inch). The Daleks are the smallest, they are about 3 cm high (1.2 inch). All pieces are made out of polymer clay.

So we have the 'good' and the 'evil' side.

:bulletred: Evil side:
:bulletgreen: King: The Master
:bulletgreen: Queen: Lady Cassandra
:bulletgreen: Bishops: Cybermen
:bulletgreen: Knights: Judoon & Sontaran
:bulletgreen: Rooks: Weeping Angels
:bulletgreen: Pawns: Daleks

:bulletred: Good side:
:bulletgreen: King: The Doctor (Ten)
:bulletgreen: Queen: Professor River Song
:bulletgreen: Bishops: Ood
:bulletgreen: Knights: Captain Jack Harkness & The Face of Boe
:bulletgreen: Rooks: Tardises
:bulletgreen: Pawns: Baby Adipose

Btw, I know I didn't place the pieces right. I have to admit I don't enjoy chess myself, although I loved it as a kid. I just love the idea of creating all the pieces now :) So I'm afraid I wasn't paying much attention when taking these photos. Sorry!

What do you guys think?

- All characters are (c) BBC
- UPDATE: the set has been SOLD! To one very lucky American :)

P.S. I wish I hadn't forgotten to put my camera on a higher resolution setting! This is the full size unfortunately. ;(

I think Tardis should be the queen, because it can move so freely.

That would also be a good choice, I agree. :)

Aand those fatballs... How about different sonic screwdrivers?

Sonic screwdrivers are cool, but they aren't really 'bulky' enough to make good chess pieces. Pawns are always difficult with DW chess sets for some reason. I had the same problems with the second (Eleven) set, and I haven't even got any ideas for the third (Twelve) yet.

One of the only 12th doctor's episodes I've watched almost every single other doctors' episodes(not the old ones, the ones after the 16 year break)

This is terrific.
I'm working on a board (judging by my biggest/widest piece, it'll be about 2'4" square) that will be comprised of six smaller boards which magnetically lock together in order to condense space.
It's got a "good" and "evil" side as well, only it's a variety of different fiction... but one of the rooks is the Tardis with the 10th Doctor peeking out, and one of the evil rooks will be a Dalek.

I really REALLY love your selection, especially the evil side. Lady Cassandra is perfect too.
Again, terrific work.

why River and not Rose? River was in one episode with 10 and was the 11th's wife not the 10th's.

And you fail... Horribly.

You cannot have a Doctor who Chess set and NOT include K-9.

I did make another last year (with Eleven). :) It's in my gallery and still for sale, although the price is rather steep. It is based on the number of hours of work (appr. 80 hours).

Oh yes, sorry. The BBC had my Etsy shop closed down last month. It's $869, excluding shipping. Steep, but the chess set is unique in the world.

It is for most people, I think. :) I wish I could make these sets much more cheaply so that everyone can have them, but I can't. Also, that would cause major trouble with the BBC, I think. This single set already did. ;)

Can you tell me what tools you used to carve these peices? I kind of want to make my own, if that's okay.

I pretty much used only a knife and my fingers. It's clay, so it just need to be molded into the right shape. I did use a simple metal wire frame for most of the figures, building the clay around it.
